GREEN FAIR

Market Square, 10am - 4pm, free admission

THURSDAY 21 AUGUST

Composting Stuff   

10.00 am – 1.00 pm at Bishop Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford

A Master Composter will explain the exciting facts of composting; how to do it and what goes where – for beginners and experienced composters.   
Drop in during the morning - no charge, but booking essential through Linda Monteith at  SSVA 01584 877756.

 

Craft Workshop for children 

10.0 – 1.0 pm at Bishop Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford

Craft activities for kids with an environmental theme, run by Scrappies (Childrens’ Scrapstore Recycling & Resource Centre).  

No charge, drop in during the morning

 

Streets for People  

7.30 pm at The Old School Room (Ludlow College), Mill Street

A presentation by Michael Loveday, Chief Executive of HEART and Chair of Living Streets. Arranged by Ludlow Civic Society, the evening will explore how Ludlow might follow other UK and European towns that have rejuvenated their centres by encouraging pedestrian priority.  
Booking essential  through VIC £3 per person

 

FRIDAY 22 AUGUST

 

Go Wild in the Churchyard  

5.30 pm – 7.0 pm in St Leonard’s Churchyard (opposite Stone House, Corve St.).  
Supervised nature activities for children, run by Caring for God’s Acre. Includes exploring the world of minibeasts and learning to weave using natural materials like wool and willow.   
Free, children must be accompanied by an adult – drop in during above times.  Refreshments provided by Friends of St Leonard’s Churchyard

 

"Feeding the World" 

7.30 pm in Bishop Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford  

An illustrated presentation and discussion.  Nick Tilt will draw on his farming experience at home and abroad to lead this seminar about the mounting international crisis surrounding the growing and distribution of enough food to feed  the global population  and help us explore some solutions.  

Tickets £2.50 at the door or from VIC in advance.

 

SATURDAY 23 AUGUST

The ‘Throw-away’ House  

Free event, running all day in the Events Square (outside Ludlow College)

This temporary structure, designed and constructed by South Shropshire District Council, demonstrates how a serviceable and attractive building can be constructed from recycled materials.   Project co-ordinated by Colin Richards, SSDC Conservation Officer

 

'Trains and Tranquillity'   
Meet at Craven Arms Railway station 9.15am to catch the 9.30 train to Bucknell.

It's 50 years since the Shropshire Hills were officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Join us on Heart of Wales train to Bucknell and walk the 5 miles to Knighton through this beautiful countryside and find out why the Shropshire Hills were one of the first areas in the country to be designated.  Return by train from Knighton (12.15pm or 6.15pm).  Walk led by Les Lumsdon and Steph Hayes, arranged by Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership.

10.30 am Greenfinch, Coder Road, Ludlow Business Park  

Discover how your household kitchen waste is turned into energy and fertiliser.

Guided Town Tour
Departing at 2.30 pm from the cannon outside the Castle. 

Organised by Ludlow Historical Research Group, the 90 minute tours follow a gentle route around the medieval walled town, looking at the history, architecture and people.

Cost £2.50 payable at start of tour.

 

SUNDAY 24 AUGUST

The ‘Throw-away’ House

Work continues on the second day of this project to build a temporary structure, designed and constructed by South Shropshire District Council, to demonstrat how a serviceable and attractive building can be constructed from recycled materials.   Project co-ordinated by Colin Richards, SSDC Conservation Officer

 

GREEN FAIR

10am - 4pm

Ludlow’s Market Square will be filled with stalls exhibiting and demonstrating green products and services. Find out how you can use alternative energy and save money!   Look at ideas on how to make our environment a better place.   There will be music, fun for children, and stalls selling good local food.

‘Climate Change’ with Museum on the Move 

10.0 am – 4.0 pm Events Square (in front of Ludlow College) 

A mobile exhibition provided by Shropshire County Council Museum Services that presents an interactive, multi-sensory experience looking at climate change in the past, present and future – using specimens and artefacts from museum collections and focusing on the problems caused by climate change in Gambia.

Allotments Open Day 

10.0 am – 4.0 pm 

Wigleys Field Allotments (near Cliffe Hotel) and Mill Street Allotments (Lower Mill St.) will both be open, by kind permission of the allotments’ committees, with people on hand to demonstrate their methods and crops. It should be fascinating to compare organic and other ways of producing good wholesome food.

“How to green your home 

11.0 am –1.0 pm Oscars, Ludlow Assembly Rooms - sponsored by South Shropshire Housing Association

A drop-in workshop with independent expert advisers who can show you how to save money and energy at home. Free

 

Bikeability 

11.0 am – 4.0 pm Ludlow College Car Park, Lower Mill Street 

Want to cycle but don’t have the puff, can’t manage the hills – then try out an electric bike – a range of makes and models will be on display and ready to test ride in this practical demonstration and exhibition arranged by Ludlow Cycling Support Group.

Free.

MONDAY 25 AUGUST

Family Cycle Ride 

11.00 am – 1.00 pm Meet at Linney Recreation Ground (below the Castle) for an 11.15 start. 

An escorted ride mainly on traffic free roads to encourage beginners and family groups (7 miles) with the option of a longer route (14 miles) on country lanes for the more energetic. Arranged by Ludlow Cycling Support Group

Bring a picnic lunch if you want to relax and socialise afterwards.

£2 for adults, £5 for families – turn up and pay on the day. Children must be accompanied

“Manufactured Landscapes”  

7.30 pm at Ludlow Assembly Rooms 

Ecology and Art collide when Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky addresses the vast project of modern civilization and its devastating impact on the earth. Filming from across the world plunges the viewer into enormous, beautiful and heartbreaking scenes to witness what we're doing to the earth in the name of progress.
